NDADS filename: SW_EL_NORM_ISEE3_1H.DOC TRF entry: b46633.txt in NSSDC's controlled digital document library, Mar. 1998. Document text follows: ---------------------- Documentation for ISEE 3 Data Set 78-079A-01K: Hourly Solar Wind Parameters Based on Electrons This documentation is entered in NSSDC's Technical Reference File as #B46633. The data are electron-based solar wind parameters and have been corrected and normalized to existing ion data. This data set was copied into a new 80-byte-record format at NSSDC from an experimenter-supplied data set that consisted of 96-byte records. The shorter record length makes reading much more convenient on a terminal screen, and was achieved without any loss of data by eliminating leading zeroes, extra blanks, and a redundant/unnecessary constant string of zeroes for minutes and fractions of minutes. Thus the new Fortran format is (I8, I3, 3(1PE12.4), 3(1PE11.4)). The items and their order in the record remain as given in the letter copied below, except that the minutes values are all 0.0, and are no longer shown. Note that this data set is hourly average solar wind data "based on electrons". There is a similar data set in NDADS. Both use electron data. The other NDADS datatype SW_EL_MOM_1H_ASCII covers 1980-02-27 to 1992-06-13. This NDADS datatype SW_EL_NORM_1H_ASCII covers 1978-08-16 to 1982-10-16, and it is described as "based on electrons", but was normalized using ion data. Densities less than .01/cm**3 and velocities less than 100 km/s should be considered erroneous. Letter below retyped from hardcopy by H. K. Hills, March 11, 1998. ============================================================================= Los Alamos [Letterhead] Date: 22 February 1985 Los Alamos National Laboratory In Reply Refer To: ESS-8-85:100-210 Los Alamos, New Mexico 87545 Mail Stop: D438 Telephone: (505) 667-3897 Dr. Joe King Code 633 Central Data Services Facility/NSSDC Goddard Space Flight Center Greenbelt, MD 20771 Dear Joe: The enclosed tape contains hour averaged plasma electron data from the Loas Alamos solar wind experiment on ISEE-3. It covers the time frame from launch in August 1978 until ISEE-3 entered the earth's magnetotail in October 1982. The electron data have been corrected and normalized to the existing ion data. Thus, the bulk parameters should be con- sidered to be reliable and of high quality. You should be aware that, unfortunately, there remains a few "bad" points on the tape. When we have written up the algorithm used in the correction proceedure, I will send you a copy. Until then, please inform users that the standard errors associated with the bulk parameters are higher for electrons than for ions. The contents of the tape are as foollows: Fortran Format: (I12, F12.4, 6E12.5) Record Format: 1) Date (Yr-Month_Day) 2) Universal time (HRMIN) 3) GSEX (Re) 4) GSEY (Re) 5) GSEZ (Re) 6) Electron density (cm-3) 7) Bulk speed (km/sec) 8) Average temperature (k) VAX 11/780 STANDARD LABEL FORMAT: ISEE3 Block Size 2048 1600 BPI Sincerely, (signature) Ron Zwickl Enc. a/s Cy: S.
