Document text follows: ---------------------- From: NCF::MTAYLOR 2-MAR-1998 12:47:53.50 Subj: DECOMPRESSING THE IMP8 MERGE ASCII DATA This is a short description of how to decompress the IMP8 MERGE ASCII data files on the various platforms. If anyone reading this has any further questions or comments, please refer them to me, Muriel Taylor at mtaylor@ndadsb.gsfc.nasa.gov. The IMP8 MERGE ASCII dataset has been made into compressed files using the GZIP utility under Unix. When FTP-ing the files to a Unix platform, the only thing you then need to do is run GUNZIP or GZIP -d on the compressed file. On a Mac, the utility Stuffit will uncompressed the files with no problems, or use the GZIP utility if you prefer. If you are FTP-ing the compressed file to a VMS platform (VAX or Alpha), you will need to do a couple of things to restore the file. Run the following two commands: $gunzip (or gzip -d) on the compressed file. Then use the VMS utility FILE to reconstruct the record size: file/record_size=3706 where file_name is the filename of the uncompressed file. This will recreate the ascii file to allow you to then edit the file as you wish. If you are using NT or Windows95 on a PC, then you can run gunzip -a (or gzip -da) . to uncompress the compressed file. If you need to get any of the GZIP utilities, use the following URL: http://www.gzip.org - this is free software distributed by GNU under the Free Software Foundation. Muriel Taylor 01Mar98
