Document title: Readme.txt for the NDADS DE EICS datatype Project: DE NDADS Datatype: EICS Super-EID: DOCUMENT There may be other documents also identified by this super-EID. NDADS filename: EICS_README.TXT TRF entry B46580.txt in NSSDC's controlled digital document library. Feb. 1998. Document text follows: ---------------------- Notes for using EICS data on a vax 1. Determine if data file exists for time interval of interest. 2. Request and obtain data from NDADS 3. Obtain Software from NDADS 4. Compile and Link software to generate executable EICS.EXE if necessary 5. Notes on running EICS.EXE and understanding the output. 1. Determine if data file exists for time interval of interest. The listing of intervals for which EICS stand alone telemetry files are available is kept on line in a file on the Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN) most of which reside on NDADS: LOCKHD::DSK2:[PETE]EICSDATA.LIS For example the user can inquire about day 4 of 1984 by issuing following command: SEARCH LOCKHD::DSK2:[PETE]EICSDATA.LIS 84004 which results in the following output: 84004B 110 0000 0015 0 876691 T335 01/25/88 84004C 905 0014 0215 864000 8100760 N T335 01/25/88 84004A 548 0214 0327 8064000 12444725 T338 02/01/88 84004C 909 0326 0528 12384000 19652828 T336 01/26/88 84004A 903 0710 0911 25824000 33045021 T335 01/25/88 84004E 443 0910 1009 33024000 36564938 T336 01/26/88 84004A 900 1010 1210 36576000 43773029 T336 01/26/88 84004C 600 1256 1416 46560000 51357130 T141 08/01/86 84004A 900 1416 1616 51360000 58557102 A T76 07/21/86 84004B 648 1616 1742 58560000 63741137 T141 08/01/86 84004D 902 1742 1943 63744000 70957252 T152 08/18/86 84004B 451 2058 2158 75456000 79061380 T336 01/26/88 84004D 909 2157 2358 79008000 86277394 T336 01/26/88 84004A 25 2357 0000 86208000 5330 N T356 03/07/88 The fields in each of the records have the following meaning #REC HHMM HHMM YYDDD IN START STOP START STOP FLAGS TAPE# PROCESS FILE TIME TIME MILLISECONDS OF DAY (QUAL) TIME ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 84004A 900 1416 1616 51360000 58557102 A T76 07/21/86 Note that the above record's data quality flag is "A". ******************************************************************** warning: always check the data quality flag of the data files ******************************************************************** The data quality flag can take on the following values. No symbol for the flag is the highest quality. The data quality symbols used are: '---', N, C, A, and . --- indicates that the data have not yet been inspected for quality. no symbol (ie. ) indicates that the data are in one of two standard modes (i.e. DRUM or FAST mode) and have been included in the EICS high resolution summary data base. N indicates that the data have NOT been included in our high resolution summary data base. Reasons for not including the data interval include, but are not limited to, instrument off, instrument mode other than DRUM or FAST, telemetry noise, duplicate file, or a short data interval. C indicates that the data in the lowest energy channel include a spurious count rate from the photoionization of residual neutral gases in the pre-acceleration region of the spectrometer as discussed by Shelley et al., Geophys. Res. Lett. 9, p942, 1982. A indicates that information about the orientation of the EICS sensor relative to the spacecraft velocity is not available. Pitch angle information is always available. 2. Request data from NDADS for example to request data for day 4 of 1984 MAIL> send To: ndadsa::archives Subj: request de eics Enter your message below. Press CTRL/Z when complete, or CTRL/C to quit: 84004 CTRL/Z MAIL> exit the following files would be staged in the staging area on NDADSA Directory ANON_DIR:[DATA_DIST.DE] EICS_84004A_0214_0327_T338.DAT;1 EICS_84004A_1416_1616_T76.DAT;1 EICS_84004A_2357_0000_T356.DAT;1 EICS_84004B_1616_1742_T141.DAT;1 EICS_84004C_0014_0215_T335.DAT;1 EICS_84004C_0326_0528_T336.DAT;1 EICS_84004C_1256_1416_T141.DAT;1 EICS_84004D_1742_1943_T152.DAT;1 EICS_84004D_2157_2358_T336.DAT;1 EICS_84004E_0910_1009_T336.DAT;1 The relationship between the staged data files filename and the records in EICSDATA.LIS is determined by the following convection EICS_(1st col.)_(3rd col.)_(4th col.)_(8th col.).DAT So, if the user wants data from the following record in EICSDATA.LIS 84004A 900 1416 1616 51360000 58557102 A T76 07/21/86 the above record would have the following filename EICS_84004A_1416_1616_T76.DAT 3. Obtain Software from NDADS In order to read the requested SATF data files software is required. To obtain the software issue the following commands $mail MAIL> send To: ndadsa::archives Subj: request de eics Enter your message below. Press CTRL/Z when complete, or CTRL/C to quit: SOFTWARE CTRL/Z MAIL> exit the following file would be staged in the stagging area on NDADSA Directory ANON_DIR:[DATA_DIST.DE] EICS_SOFTWARE.BCK The software and documentation necessary to use the software is located in the backup file EICS_SOFTWARE.BCK To restore the original files execute $backup eics_software.bck/save * 4. Note: The software modules are in fortran, pascal, and assembly language, the .obj files are provided in case your machine doesn't have the necessary compiler, also the executable EICS.EXE is provided. This software will only run in a VAX VMS environment. If necessary, Compile and Link the software to generate executable EICS.EXE Once the software has been copied to your machine issue the following commands to compile and link it. $@recompile_objects.com $@link_eics_program this will create and executable called EICS.EXE note: during the link and compile process the user will get numerous error and warning messages. 5. Notes on running EICS.EXE and understanding the output. Information on running EICS.EXE and understanding its output are located in files EICS_TEXT_DESCRIBING_THE_ANALYSIS_SOFTWARE.TXT EICS_ANNOTATED_OUTPUT_LISTING.TXT
