CD_9.LATEST_INFO October 21, 1994 H. Kent Hills TABLE OF CONTENTS I. Introduction II. Guidelines to Appropriate CDAW Data Useage III. Specific Topics I. INTRODUCTION This file contains the latest information about CDAW-9 and the status of the CDAW-9/PROMIS Data Base Prototype CD-ROM. This document, B44510 in NSSDC's Technical Reference File, will be maintained in digital format by NSSDC, and will be kept up to date as additional information becomes available. A paper copy will be distributed with the CD-ROMs. Although the original documentation indicated a different address for an electronic copy of these information updates, they will be available for copy as follows: - Anonymous ftp from node nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov as file [space_physics.cdaw.cdrom]cd_9.latest_info. - DECnet copy from NSSDCA::ANON_DIR:[SPACE_PHYSICS.CDAW.CDROM]CD_9.LATEST_INFO. For the CDAW-9/PROMIS Data Base Prototype CD-ROM (the only one so far), a list of known problems and solutions will be kept up to date in this same directory, with the filename CD_9.PROBLEMS. Users are encouraged to contact us with any problems they might encounter in using these data. For general CDAW questions and for topics where the previous documentation directed users to contact Susan Kayser, they should now contact: Dr. H. Kent Hills Internet: hills@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov DECnet: NSSDCA::HILLS Phone: (301)-441-4195 FAX: (301)-441-9486 OR Dr. Robert McGuire Internet: mcguire@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov DECnet: NSSDCA::MCGUIRE Phone: (301)-286-7794 FAX: (301)-286-1771 Users with questions about the special image-display program CXIT or its Macintosh version CMIT should now contact: cdfsupport@nssdca.gsfc.nasa.gov II. GUIDELINES TO APPROPRIATE CDAW DATA USAGE (For CDAW Data Bases That Have Been Declared Non-Proprietary.) The Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW) program is developed and operated jointly by the Space Physics Data Facility and the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. The individual data sets in these collections of data were submitted by individual investigators or participants in these respective CDAW workshop series as collaborative data intended for use in correlative studies and always in consultation with the original data provider(s) involved. WARNING: While these data bases are now non-proprietary and publicly accessible, users of this system and these data are cautioned that the data are not necessarily true archival data products but were intended to be ordinarily used in consultation and with the advice of the original data suppliers. Data in these data bases are NOT warranted against possible problems IF used for publication WITHOUT appropriate consultation with the original data providers. In some cases subsequent final archival products have been created and are archivally held that may be of better quality for many purposes. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS: In any publication or presentation of data from these data bases and this system, authors should acknowledge the original suppliers of the data being presented as well as the Coordinated Data Analysis Workshop (CDAW) program, the Space Physics Data Facility, and the National Space Science Data Center. Authors are reminded that acknowledgment of contributing efforts and facilities used make all parts of this effort more visible to the research community and to the agencies that fund this work, and that visibility is a key factor in assisting to establish and enhance future activities of this nature. III. SPECIFIC TOPICS 1. The CDAW-9 data base and CDAW-9 CD-ROM are no longer proprietary, but are open and available to the public. 2. The CDF software library is still available on the Anonymous account, in directory [CDF], as given in the original documentation, but CDF22-DIST (version 2.2) has been replaced by CDF24-DIST (version 2.4). The MacIntosh version of the CDF software is not yet available, but is expected. The original documentation contained on the CDAW-9 CDROM indicated that certain software could be found in the anonymous account at directory [CD-ROM]; the correct directory is [CDROM], but there is no CXIT file there (see item 4. below). The files there may be of use in browsing a CD-ROM, but have nothing specifically related to this CDAW-9 CD-ROM. 3. The subsequent "final" edition of the CDAW-9 CD-ROM (referred to in the original documentation) has not been generated, and will probably not be done soon. Similarly, the CDAW-8 data have not been put on CD-ROM, and this is not presently scheduled. 4. The special image-display program CXIT, designed for useful display of the auroral images from DE and Viking, now has three versions, and is available for anonymous ftp transfer from ncgl.gsfc.nasa.gov (128.183.10.238). The following software is available in the specified directories. - /pub/cdf/apps/graphics/mac CMIT: CDF Image Tool for the Macintosh - /pub/cdf/apps/graphics/msdos CWIT: CDF Image Tool for the MS-Windows - /pub/cdf/apps/graphics/unix CXIT: CDF Image Tool for X-Windows 5. We are in the process of updating the list of ground magnetic stations for use with CXIT, but the current list is okay. The updates consist mainly of adding official three-letter codes for some of the stations. 6. On WWW, see the URL http://ndadsb.gsfc.nasa.gov/spds/cdaw.html for the CDAW home page. Various user guides, catalogs, and other information can be reached from there. This may be a more convenient way to access the data catalogs in particular. But note that not all CDAWs are included yet. 7. Also on WWW, at URL http://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/cd-rom/cd-rom.html, the NSSDC catalog of CD-ROMs may be found. This is a current list of brief information about the various CD-ROMs that NSSDC has available for distribution. This has no particular connection to CDAW; it is listed here as a possibly useful source of information for the user.
