General Menu Properties

Menus built under the Generic Menu Package all have the same look and feel. Some of the look and feel may be customized by altering various Preference settings but certain basic properties will remain.

The figure below shows a menu constructed using the Generic Menu Package

A menu is separated into three sections. The top and main sections will contain general options while the lower section constitutes a dialog area. All messages generated by the menu will appear in the dialog area.

Each line in the main section of the menu is preceeded by a Help button unless it has been explicitly surpressed. Clicking on any Help button provides usage or general instructions pertinent to the options on the line. The output occurs in the dialog area. If no help text has been associated with the Help button in the menu then the text

NO HELP ON THIS MENU ITEM

is displayed. In the case when a menu option line consists of multiple Reply Boxes, holding down the Help button may display an abbreviated set of instructions in the Reply Boxes themselves.

When entering options into an Entry box in a menu, the entry should be terminated with at return. This has two effects: it advances the menu focus to the next menu option where applicable; and it trigers any conditions which have been set on the option. The latter can include disabling and setting other options.
