Dynamics Explorer 1 Plasma Wave Instrument (PWI)
                         Data Set Characteristics

Source: Dynamics Explorer 1 (DE-1)

Background:

The Dynamics Explorer 1 spacecraft (DE-1) was one of two satellites launched
together into coplanar polar orbits for the purpose of studying coupling
between the magnetosphere, ionosphere, and the atmosphere. DE-1 was launched
on 3 August 1981 into a 6950 km (1.09 RE) by 29650 km (4.65 RE) orbit with a
period of 410 min and was officially turned-off on 15 March 1991. Instruments
aboard the DE-1 spacecraft were: spin-scan auroral imager, energetic ion
composition spectrometer, high altitude plasma instrument, magnetometer, plasma
wave instrument, and retarding ion mass spectrometer.

Instrument/Detector:	Plasma Wave Instrument (PWI) 81-70A-02A
				Sweep Frequency Correlator (SFC)
				Low Frequency Correlator (LFC)
				Wideband Analog Receiver (WBR)
				Linear Wideband Receiver (LWR)
				DC Electric Field system

Naming Convention:	Daily files of form PWI_yyddd.DAT (e.g., PWI_81268.DAT,
day 268 of year 1981, where day 1 is January 1) contain
			one full day's available data.

Documentation: VOLDESC.SFD, FORMAT.SFD, SSCDOC.SFD,
calibration files *.CAL, source code *.FOR,
			sample output files TEST*.DAT

Data Mode:	Various modes, described in FORMAT.SFD

Data Type:	AC electric and magnetic fields, narrow band spectra, DC
electric field, and phase angle. AC electric field measurements are
made from 1 Hz to 2 MHz, and the AC magnetic field measurements are
made over the range from 1 Hz to 400 kHz. The narrow band measurements
range in frequency from 100 Hz to 400 kHz. Orbit and housekeeping data
are also included. Each record contains 442 Integer*4 values.

Data Format:	Native format (see FORMAT.SFD)
		Format conversion software? PWI.FOR

Data Media:	Fourteen 12" Optimem optical platters covering 9/16/81 - 6/23/84

Data Form:	Flat unformatted sequential fixed-length files (binary)

Number of data sets of each type to be archived (estimated): 650 daily files

Typical File Size:	20? MB (40000? VAX blocks)

Typical Record Size (Max,Min):	1768 bytes

Total Volume: 14 GB

Future Data Products:	Iowa is investigating digitizing the analog PWI data.

Validation requirements:	Data set quality is excellent; after 84175,
digital measurements above 100 Hz are not consistently available and
	thus not provided.
